We sure do love our Estimate Jar activity! Today, we did our April jar! April flew by with the students seeing what was in there!
Each student wrote down their estimate on their white board of how many boxes of smarties were crammed on in the jar.
We decided today we would count by 2's because the ojects were kind of big so there weren't as many to count and we could always use more practice counting by 2!
Then for the big moment...we all took a turn going around the class and sharing our estimate. We compared numbers and how far away our estimate was from the actual total we had of the boxes of smarties.
Joey, Ruby and Tessa were our lucky winners!!! They were each only 1 away from the 21 treats we had in total! They knew our tradition is to share the treats with everyone in the class. Everyone got to enjoy a box of smarties. However, we had only 2 boxes left to share with our winners! Oh no...we came up with some ideas how to solve this problem. Then we decided to open the boxes and share the treats inside. This was a great introduction to dividing skills for fair sharing and worked out great evenly that each of the winners got to have 7 more treats.
Sweet deal! Some sweet math on a Tuesday morning!
