Reading Work Samples

There are two major parts that your child is assessed on
  1. Ability to read words (decode and word call)
  2. Comprehension of what is read
Students, in our school board, read along a continuum of book difficulty starting from A-Z. 'A' texts are those that students beginning reading early in kindergarten and progress into the more complex texts later on in the alphabet. We use various reading assessments to help determine their 'Just Right' reading level. The chart below are the guidelines we use for provincial standards of where students should be achieving.

We assess this by having students read, read and read some more. But also how they respond to their reading and demonstrate their comprehension. These are done through reading response activities. The following are some samples of the expectations and standards for Grade 2 & 3.
