More Mental Math Strategies...

We are learning more addition and subtraction mental math strategies!! We have now learned 12 different strategies. A collection of these came home previously and sending home an updated package. Please use these at home to help with our math work that comes home and to practice these strategies when you get a chance to build our skills of our math facts! These are getting a little more complex in thinking and shows students' abilities to manipulate numbers and see the relationships. We are spending two weeks on each strategy now as review and practice!

The past couple weeks we have been working on our Monkey in the Middle facts! This has been tricky because we have to also really know our Doubles as well to help us. When we see an addition question where we add two numbers that have one number in between (the monkey in the middle), we double the monkey number and get the addition sentence much faster. However, those that are struggling with addition should revert back to the Count On strategy until they can really get the concept. But we are really starting to get it and not just use the Count On strategy. Count On and Count Back are really if no other strategy is available but still need a plan B!

Next week, we will be focusing on Doubles Plus One! When we add neighbours on the numberline, we always double the smaller number and add one more! We will be focusing on this throughout the week before March Break and when we return.

A reminder that each Friday we will have our 5 question quiz to see how we are doing as we continue to learn and apply these strategies.
